OUR STORY

The Origin of an Icon
In 1936, Keeneland opened six miles outside of downtown Lexington. Sometime shortly thereafter, a white sycamore was planted in the area that would become the Keeneland paddock, creating an iconic symbol of Keeneland’s forward-thinking spirit and enduring legacy.

Uniting the Past and the Future
More than 80 years later, Keeneland is bringing the culture of Thoroughbred racing back to downtown, where Lexington’s first racetrack once stood. The tradition of racing, the iconic white sycamore and Keeneland’s commitment to quality and community all converge to create a new place that brings together the past and the future: Keeneland Mercantile.
